Guy Bromley- Biography

Guy Barrington Bromley’ son of a telecommunications Charles Bromley was born in 1945 at St Pancras, London. The family moved to the Channel Islands in 1947 and immigrated to East Africa in 1956. He attended the Prince of Wales School in Nairobi from 1959 to 1962. In 1964, Bromley embarked on what was to be a 20-year career in the motor Industry. In 1969, he passed the Institute of the Motor Industry’s final examinations and in 1982 and was awarded Fellow Membership of the Institute. Bromley maintains his membership to this day.

Bromley served a 3-year apprenticeship with the Cooper Motor Corporation between 1964 and 1967, in Kenya. In 1967 he joined Westlands Motor Ltd, sole importers and distributors for Toyota vehicles in Kenya. In 1976, he was appointed to the board as general manager. In 1978, he was promoted to the position of managing director.

In 1976, the Toyota Motor Corporation produced a history containing three volumes of their first 40 years of motor vehicle production. Bromley is mentioned on several occasions in these volumes.

Bromley has a long association with motor sport, having won a number of Kenya Club Championships. He also gained several top placings in the tough Kenya National Championship rallies. In 1980 and ’81, he completed the Safari Rally, acknowledged at the time as the longest and toughest in the World Championship Rallies (WCR) in a Kenyan prepared Toyota Corolla 1600GT. It was developed and prepared under his guidance and supervision.

Bromley immigrated to the UK in 1984 where he has established and runs a successful property business. He is also an acknowledged authority on post war Japanese tin toys, modelled on American, European and Japanese vehicles.

Bromley’s great, great uncle, the Reverend Henry Bromley (1797 – 1878), a congregational minister, married Joanna Vassa (1795-1857) in 1821. Joanna was the only surviving daughter of her famous West African father, Olaudah Equiano – otherwise known as Gustavus Vassa, “the African.” Olaudah was a leading anti-slavery campaigner and had long been involved in the movement to abolish the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. He was also a well-known author.

Bromley has 2 daughters Christianne and Natalie and 2 sons, Alex and Nicholas.
